Justifiable Pre-Teen Crushes

July 25th 2007 12:00
Before you get any ideas in your head, I am not talking about myself, as an adult, having a crush on any underage people. I am instead writing about two crushes I had when I was in primary school that I consider to be perfectly legitimate.

The first crush is Ocean Girl.

Ocean Girl, the star of the series Ocean Girl, probably has a real name. I don’t actually think that Ocean Girl was the name of her character. But she was lovely, and while the concept that she could communicate with whales was somewhat wussy for a eight-year-old like myself to approve of, she made up for it since she was gorgeous.

In fact, her character name when she featured on ‘Round the Twist’ was simply ‘Beautiful Girl’. She was in six episodes of that show, and she didn’t even get a proper character name. According to Paul Jennings, beautiful girls don’t need names.

What is a little strange is that there are a bunch of fan pages all about Ocean Girl, ie- Marzena Godecki, including one from the Netherlands. In the section on the website entitled ‘What’s New’, it wishes Marzena a happy birthday for September 28th, 1997. It seems that not even the most devoted fans can offer more up-to-date information than that.

Let’s start a rumour that she’s dead.

The other crush of my childhood is Alex Mack.

Alex Mack was not only very cute, but an accident drenching her in a radioactive chemical results in all sorts of cool superpowers. She can move things telekinetically, can turn into a liquid and can shoot electric zaps through her fingertips. Now that is nothing short of awesome.

She also featured in ‘Third Rock From The Sun’, and the movie ’10 Things I Hate About You’, but despite all the promise she showed as a child actor, she’s been absent from our lives for far too long. Yet it’s not like we can start death rumours about her. She recently starred in a movie which was appropriately called, ‘Relative Obscurity’. Nobody saw it.

Alex Mack, the box office may not love you, but I still do.
